KDEB Waste Management company Sdn Bhd which began providing garbage collection services last year, in Klang, is also playing a role to help clean up waste at illegal dumpsites.
KDEB general manager Ramli Mohd Tahir said the company was committed to clearing illegal dumpsites in their jurisdiction.
He said the company looks after 20 zones and other areas would be covered in stages.
“This is an additional responsibility for us but we hope our role will not only improve the cleanliness of Klang but also enable the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) to get rid of illegal dumpsites,” he said, adding that KDEB began clearing illegal dumpsites from July.
KDEB cleared 20 tonnes of waste from an illegal dumpsite in the Selat Selatan light industrial area in Port Klang.
MPK councillor Athi Saravanan, who monitored the clearing work along KDEB’s coordinator Liyana, said the dumpsite at Jalan Selat Selatan 20 had been operating for almost three months.
“KDEB just took over the public cleansing service of the area only this month and the company has done a great job in clearing the illegal dumpsite which has been an eyesore in the area.
“From now on, the contractor will clean up the area on a daily basis so that there will be no garbage left on the spot and we hope this will discourage the offenders from disposing waste illegally,” he said, adding that KDEB’s intervention also saved MPK a lot money required for hiring of contractors to clear illegal dumpsites.
Athi said the council also caught one of the offenders who dumped factory waste at the site and the company was fined RM3,500.
He said the vehicle used to carry out the illegal activity was also seized by the council.
“MPK will continue to step up its enforcement against illegal dumping in Klang,” he said.
