WORK to resolve flood woes at a major part of South Klang is under way with a RM10.3mil flood mitigation project approved by the Selangor Government.
The project to be carried out by the Klang Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID), will be completed in September next year.
Klang Municipal (MPK) councillor Tony Leong said the allocation was granted for two flood mitigation projects that were expected to resolve flashflood woes at Taman Bayu Perdana, Taman Chi Liung, Palm Grove, Southern Park, Kampung Delek and Sungai Udang.
He said that under the first project, Sungai Sireh would be widened and deepened from Taman Yamin to Teluk Gadung where a retention pond would be built.
“The new tidal gates will complement the two existing ones in the area.
“They will increase the flow of water from the river to the sea especially during downpours,” he said.
He added that the RM2.7mil project would be completed in September 2018.
Leong said he was happy that the work on both projects had started and was confident that they would be completed according to schedule.
He said the state government had allocated the budget in view of the urgency of the matter after it realised that DID was unable to carry out the projects due to lack of funds.
Upon completion of the projects, he said, residents from several housing estates and villages would not face flashfloods in their areas.
He said Taman Bayu Perdana residents, especially, would be relieved as the area had been hit by frequent and major flashfloods since it was developed in 1998.
“The council has spent millions of ringgit to improve the situation in Bayu Perdana prior to the implementation of these projects.
“However, once the new projects are completed, we expect that the area will be completely free from the threat of flashflood and the residents can sleep with ease,” he said.
He said residents from Taman Chi Liung and Petaling Garden would be equally relieved, adding that they had been victims of frequent flashfloods from many years.
