Do you seek to live large in a small dwelling?
Some simple techniques to transform your small home into a spacious and comfortable house with a personalised touch.
Flooring
Be choosy in your flooring type. It is advisable to choose large-format designed tiles as lesser grout lines result in a luxurious appearance.
If you are a fan of timber, you could always opt for wider floorboards.
Aside from tiles, you can also make your unit look spacious by using a round rug. It will create a seamless transition between furniture pieces.
Do not place a rug under the sofa as this may visually shrink the room’s space.
Wall paint
When it comes to the walls, it is always best to opt for monochrome shades. An excellent choice of paint colour will visually enlarge the spaces within one’s home.
A wall with open, bright and neutral textures can extend the feel of a small space.
White paint is an excellent choice as it will provide a spacious look through the reflection and multiplication of light in the homes.
The lighter the colour, the more spacious a room would feel. If a wall colour is the same as the flooring, the edges where they would meet should also be less noticeable.
Mirror
Another decorating tip is to use the mirrors. Mirrors can reflect the light and visually double the space of a room, as well as amplifying the widening impact of windows.
Wallpaper
Dark-coloured wallpaper is not advisable as it will reduce the spaciousness of property. The same tip applies to wallpaper with horizontal patterns. The usage of vertically patterned wallpaper is more significant as it will make a room feel a lot airier.
Windows
Hanging curtains beyond the actual size of windows regarding height and width will give the room a more extensive look.
It will play a visual trickery to the tenants by leading them to think the windows are more prominent and the ceilings are much higher than they are.
The windows are essential as well, as the beautiful views of nature would unify the outside world with the inside and thus expanding the spatial feel of the room.
Lighting
Allowing natural light into a room will open up the view aside from providing a bright illumination source.
Hang the lights (pendant lights) as low as possible. This will ensure the flooring would always be well lit. The illuminations present at the table or eye level would also limit the existence of shadows.
Furniture
1. Colour of furniture
Putting everything in the same colour or colour tone will make an area look bigger than it is.
When purchasing furniture and appliances, paint the walls first. Next, choose your furniture and tools that complement the shades of the wall.
2. Multi-function furniture
The furniture that serves many functions will make a room feel less cluttered. It is also the most straightforward tactic to optimise the space of the chamber.
When one is not using this kind of furniture, it is always advisable to pack it up and store it behind a door or even under the bed.
Some examples of such furniture include double drop-leaf tables, narrow dining tables or an expandable table.
