PERTUBUHAN Amal Seri Sinar’s (Pass) Plant A Tree programme that was carried out at SMK Datok Lokman in Kuala Lumpur has encouraged the school to be more involved in green activities.
School principal Latifah Mohd Yusoff said, “Today’s effort might seem small, but it will surely benefit the lives of our children in the future.”
The programme by Pass, a non-governmental organisation established in 2003 to educate the public on recycling and environmental conservation, saw the donation of 30 bucida plants to the school.
Ching noted that Malaysia has a long way to go compared to countries such as Brazil and Kenya in terms of going green.
“We are here, today, not only as volunteers in this greening effort but also to urge the public to wake up and be more conscious members of the Malaysian society,” he said.
PIBG member Ram Singh Randhawa, who was at the event with his son to plant a tree, said the first step of planting plants was easy but maintaining them required commitment.
“We should have started planting plants 20 years ago but we didn’t. The next best thing to do is to plant them now,” he said.
One of the event’s sponsors, Chong Lee Phing, 26, together with her father, sponsored five bucida plants after coming across Pass’ plant donation effort while browsing through the Internet.
Mitsubishi Elevator Sdn Bhd and Disco Hi-Tech Sdn Bhd were among other sponsors that helped the society plant the bucida trees around the school.
