THE 63-year-old Jalan Jelutong flats comprising 48 units now look brand new and well-maintained, thanks to a facelift by the Penang Island City Council.

A total of RM75,555 was spent to repaint the facade, awning and window grills.

The council’s Financial Management Committee alternate chairman Joseph Ng said the repainting of the four three-storey blocks was completed on Jan 6.

He added that the defects liability period would end on June 30.

Ng said the colour used to repaint the blocks was decided by the residents through balloting under the gender responsive participatory budgeting concept.

“The Jalan Jelutong flats project is one of the council’s public housing schemes.

“Residents pay only RM102 monthly to rent a 408sq ft unit,” he said at a press conference at the flats on Wednesday.

“Although the rental is cheap, we will never neglect the well-being of the residents here.

“Maintenance and upgrading works have been carried out from time to time.”

In 2014, the council changed the wiring system of each unit to ensure the residents’ safety.

Resident Rahimah Kaldar Mastan, 63, thanked the council for looking into their interests and welfare.

“I like the new colour of the blocks. They look nice and new,” she said, adding that she would maintain the cleanliness of the flats so that residents could live comfortably.

She also thanked Sungai Pinang assemblyman Lim Siew Khim for building a wheelchair ramp outside her unit.

She said the ramp would come in handy for her son Sirajudin Karim Gani, 34, who is paralysed after an accident.

“With the ramp, my son can move around better, especially when he has to go to hospital for treatment and physiotherapy three times a month,” she said.

Lim said a 1,053sq ft plot would also be given to the residents to carry out urban farming.

“Details of the project will be finalised and announced soon,” she said.

Also at the press conference were councillors Edward Tan, D.R. Kala and Saiful Azwan Abd Malik.
