ABOUT 100 residents including business operators and traders from Taman Suntex gathered at the community hall in Batu 9, Cheras, to protest against the elevated ramp proposed by PJ Development Holdings Berhad (PJD) in Cheras along the Cheras-Kajang Highway.
The elevated ramp is from the township of ‘YOU’ City, developed by PJD, heading into Taman Suntex.
Resident Low Kong Yong, who lived in Jalan Kijang, said the proposed elevated ramp would affect businesses in Taman Suntex.
“We have not been given sufficient information by the authorities on its function and the adequacy of the turning radius at the junction of Jalan Suntex and Jalan Kijang on the ramp,” he said.
He added that the traffic dispersal ramp would leave a visual impact on the shops along Jalan Kijang 1.
“I have got a consultant to study the ramp proposal and we have come up with a solution that would benefit residents in the long run.
“If the ramp is being built, we will request for a design of a traffic management scheme of the area on the basis of “without elevated ramp” along Jalan Kijang. The second request is the junction at Jalan Suntex/Jalan Kijang be reviewed.
“We have suggested a grade-separated interchange at Jalan Kijang/Jalan Suntex to serve as a main traffic dispersal node.
“This will not only focus on solving the problems of the area but will avoid complicated traffic conflicts at the landing point of the proposed elevated ramp,” said Low.
Dusun Tua assemblyman Razaly Hassan and Kajang municipal councillor Young Syefura Othman also attended the meeting.
Young Syefura defended the council saying that a meeting will be held today with PJD, the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) and residents on the elevated ramp project.
“The project has not been approved yet. During this meeting, I will bring up the residents’ suggestions and proposals,” she said.
Young Syefura explained that under the project, PJD would also build a two-storey wet market comprising a carpark, foodcourt, multi-purpose hall and badminton court as well.
“About 70 wet market traders will be relocated from the old market into the new wet market.
“The residents will only know the outcome after the meeting on Sept 23,” she said.
Razaly, meanwhile, said the ramp project would only make matters worse for residents, especially along Jalan Kijang and Jalan Kijang 1.
“Besides this, it does not solve the traffic problems here, especially during rush hour.
“The ramp does not help the situation and I will talk to MPKj to see how we can resolve the situation,” he said.
A. K. Marie Joseph, 50, who lives in Jalan Kinabalu, Taman Suntex, welcomed development in the area with the upgrading of drains, MRT and other highways but added that it should not come at the expense of residents.
“If the ramp takes shape, it will be difficult for my family to get into the house as it will cause a backlog of traffic as my road will be a main road.
“I hope MPKj listens to our concerns before making any decision,” she said.
