HOUSEWIFE Norhayati Yunus used to feel anxious whenever high tide is expected as her house in Taman Melawis, Klang gets flooded up to three times a year.
But now the mother of four just feels numb at the sight of water rising along Jalan Emas where her home is located.
“I am used to it as for two decades, I have faced flash floods.
“I moved into this house after getting married and it is owned by my mother-in-law. We do not have the means to move out.
Norhayati, who is a kidney patient, is fed up with the authorities’ lack of action to resolve flood woes in the area.
“I have been informed that the Selangor Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) was given an allocation to resolve this longstanding problem.
“I really hope work can start soon.”
Norhayati said she would have no peace of mind over the next two months as the high tide phenomenon is expected to continue in November and December.
StarMetro had reported that construction of a cross drainage culvert to be built under a rail track for flood mitigation in Taman Melawis was delayed as issues had to be ironed out with Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTM).
Klang Municipal Council (MPK) secretary Adi Faizal Ahmad Tarmizi said KTM’s consultants had now agreed in principle to allow DID to build a cross drainage culvert at its rail line from Lorong Loyang to Lorong Sembilang 8E to prevent flash floods.
Rainwater run-off will be directed to flow out from Taman Melawis via the culvert to Jalan Tepi Sungai.
Meanwhile, MPK’s Engineering Department has begun widening drains in the area as a flood mitigation measure.
Old drains have been dug out and new ones are being constructed in the back lanes parallel to Jalan Emas.
