KUALA LUMPUR, 10 January 2017 ~ Sunway Group, Malaysia’s leading conglomerate with core interests in real estate and construction, bagged two awards at the ACCA MaSRA 2016, held at the Sime Darby Convention Centre.
Sunway Group’s President, Datuk Chew Chee Kin received the ‘Commendation Award: Commitment’ and the ‘Commendation Award: Knowledge Management’ on behalf of Sunway Berhad, from the guest of honour, Deputy Minister of Finance I, YB Datuk Othman Aziz.
Dato’ Chew Chee Kin said, “Sustainability is deeply embedded within the DNA of the Sunway Group, and is evident through the values we embrace, as well as the townships we build, own and operate.”
“Sustainability reporting is an initiative that will help drive Malaysian corporations towards our nation’s goals as well as the ambitions of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
We commend the Bursa Malaysia and ACCA for creating this impetus for corporations to contribute towards our prolonged prosperity. We are humbled by these recognitions and will continue to strive to help build a better nation and a better world,” he added.
Subsidiaries Sunway Construction and Sunway Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) were also shortlisted for their continuous efforts in sustainability reporting.
Prior to the Awards ceremony, a Sustainability Forum for Directors/CEO was also held. Titled “The Velocity of Global Change & Sustainability – The New Business Model,” the forum focused on how current global trends are reshaping global and regional companies, and examined how businesses can play a significant role in contributing towards universal action.
Sunway Property’s Managing Director, Sarena Cheah, was one of the panelists at the forum alongside sustainability experts - Sustainalytics’s Sector Manager for ESG research, Hardik Sanjay Shah, and Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI)’s Associate Director and Head of Asia (ex-Japan), Jessica Robinson.
Cheah emphasised Sunway’s commitment towards sustainability by bridging academia with industry excellence through the Jeffrey Sachs Center on Sustainable Development launched in December 2016 at Sunway University, which is a collaboration with the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network Association.
“Through the years, we realised that there is a need to develop closely with the sustainability agenda, and realising the synergies that can be reaped from the various components of the Sunway Group,” Cheah continued.
The ACCA MaSRA Awards 2016 is the eighth installation of the nation’s longest running awards that recognise organisations which report and disclose material economic, environmental and social information in line with sustainability reporting frameworks.
Besides encouraging the uptake of sustainability reporting, the awards also aim to recognise organisations that report and disclose economic, environmental and social information in line with sustainability reporting frameworks in order to raise awareness of corporate transparency issues.
Unlike previous years, this year, the award criteria have been modified to align with the recent Listing Requirements of Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad of the Main Market Listing Requirements and the ACE Market Listing Requirements.
This has been done to enable organisations that are required to meet these requirements and who wish to enter the MaSRA award to avoid the necessity of preparing separate reports and for organisations who do not need to meet the Bursa requirements to move them towards best practice.
It is also notable that Sunway Berhad and Sunway REIT have made the FTSE4GOOD Bursa Malaysia Index in 2016 and Sunway Construction Group Berhad, has been on the FTSE4GOOD Bursa Malaysia Index since 2015.
