JOHOR BARU: Sunway City Iskandar Puteri (SCIP) has been honoured with two prestigious five-diamond awards from the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC). These awards recognise SCIP's significant efforts in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improving carbon sequestration. The achievements of SCIP are highlighted across the five key sustainability areas of energy, water, waste, mobility and greenery.
The first award recognises SCIP’s green masterplan, which has successfully cut GHG emissions by 50%. SCIP is the only green-certified township in the region, implementing initiatives such as EV charging stations, solar panels, dedicated bicycle lanes and security measures like CCTV surveillance.
The second award honours the partnership between Majlis Bandaraya Iskandar Puteri (MBIP) and SCIP in developing a low-carbon city, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
The award was presented to NCT by Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
“At SCIP, sustainability lies at the heart of everything that we do, and we are committed to shaping a greener future for all. The recognitions we have received from MGTC are testaments to our commitment and represent tangible progress in our mission to build a thriving, eco-conscious community. More significantly, they serve as impetuses for us to continue championing green urban living and carrying out innovative sustainability initiatives, such as expanding our cloud-based recycling data system, smart, and energy-efficient infrastructure that enhances both environmental sustainability and community well-being,” said SCIP chief executive officer Gerard Soosay.
SCIP’s sustainability mission aligns with Sunway Group’s broader vision of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Reinforcing its green urban development strategy, SCIP signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with MBIP in September 2024, pledging to spearhead low-carbon initiatives under the Iskandar Puteri Climate Action Plan 2030 (IPCAP 2030).
"Collective action is key in driving meaningful change, and our collaboration with SCIP has been fundamental in building a low-carbon, sustainable future. We are proud to have been recognised by MGTC for our work with SCIP to reduce emissions in the township through the implementation of smart technologies and sustainable practices, which also contributes to the overall quality of life for residents," said MBIP mayor Ahmad Nazir Mohd Nasir.
With these awards, SCIP reinforces its position as a leader in sustainable urban development, advancing Malaysia towards a greener future.
