KUALA LUMPUR: Sime Darby Property Bhd announces its pledge to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050 in conjunction with its recent Sustainability Day 2023 at Sime Darby Convention Centre, Kuala Lumpur.

The goal aims to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C, reflecting Sime Darby Property’s dedication to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Pledging to net zero emissions is a proactive step toward ensuring the long-term viability of the company, Sime Darby Property group managing director Datuk Azmir Merican said.

“Climate change is one of the biggest global challenges that humanity faces and as the nation’s pioneer property developer, the company has great responsibility in taking the necessary actions to change the way we do things to minimise our operations’ impact on nature,” he added.

The company’s approach involves tackling scope one and scope two emissions, which cover emissions from sources owned by Sime Darby Property and emissions produced from energy purchased and used by Sime Dary Property businesses.

“Our operations, products, and supply chain are interconnected elements of our business ecosystem and transforming them is not just a necessity but an opportunity. By embracing innovation and sustainable practices, we are aligning with global environmental goals and also future-proofing our company,” Azmir said.

Sime Darby Property set a target to reduce its scope one and two emissions by 40% by 2030.

The company outlined several initiatives for this purpose, such as retrofitting its assets with energy-efficient technology and transitioning to renewable energy sources to power operations.  These initiatives include the installation of rooftop solar photovoltaic panels in 14 operation sites, the usage of lower carbon cement, carbon removal through nature-based solutions such as the conservation and regeneration of urban biodiversity, and more.

Sime Darby Property is currently developing urban biodiversity in two of its townships. The company identified 184 acres of wetland managed for flood mitigation, as well as conserving 53 acres of secondary forest at KL East Park.

The company is also prioritising efforts to establish a comprehensive plan towards net zero, reporting their efforts to begin a baseline assessment of waste, business travel and employee commuting.

Moving forward, Sime Darby Property will be collaborating with stakeholders from tenants, and contractors to suppliers, aimed at understanding its scope three emissions. These are emissions not produced by Sime Darby Property and are not the result of activities from assets, rather they are indirectly responsible for these emissions along the value chain.

“We believe that it is important to have accurate data before we disclose our scope three emissions.  This is to ensure that our disclosures are transparent, credible, and accurately reflect our efforts to reduce our emissions,” Azmir said.

Sime Darby Property sustainability general manager Dr Yasmin Rasyid, independent non-executive director Datuk Hamidah Naziadin and health, safety, security and environment general manager Mohd Razif Mohd Yusoff were also at the event.
