TWO schools in Sentul, Kuala Lumpur will soon be equipped with a Facilitate Rapid Online Global (Frog) classroom each worth RM100,000, courtesy of YTL Foundation.

SMK Sentul Utama and SK Batu Muda came out tops in the MyCommunity Project competition, which won them the Frog classroom makeover as a result of their creative projects.

YTL’s Frog classroom programme was established to transform classrooms throughout Malaysia into modern learning spaces, designed to promote technology enabled and student focused learning.

The MyCommunity Project is where schools carry out projects based on the United Nations’ 17 sustainable development goals in efforts to transform the world, which is a global initiative supported by the Department of Environment.

Among the themes highlighted by the schools were quality education, climate change, sustainable cities and communities, and zero poverty.

SMK Sentul Utama’s project, under the Secondary School category, involved baking and selling cupcakes. Their winning entry, Jolly Cupcakes, was aimed to boost confidence among students to speak and communicate in English.

Teacher Rajamani A. Ramasamy said their project was about teamwork and helping the community around Sentul with the profits earned from the sale of cupcakes.

“We also went to distribute food to Rumah Titian Kasih orphanage,” she said.

In the Primary School category, SK Batu Muda’s project – Hot Tro-pic – encouraged awareness on climate change and natural disasters.

“Our school made good use of recycled paper, where we made decorations with it,” said teacher Dineswaren Valaigam.

The runners-up were SK Segam-but and SM Sains Seri Puteri, where each school won a cash prize of RM7,000 each.

The MyCommunity Project falls under English@CLiC – a corporate social responsibility initiative by Sentul Raya Sdn Bhd, in collaboration with the Education Ministry and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), to help uplift the English language proficiency of the Sentul community.

The competition saw participation from 22 primary schools and 11 secondary schools in Sentul.

English@CLiC integrates IT into teaching and was launched in 2015 to improve the command of English via 21st century learning and teaching methods involving 112 teachers from Sentul.

The programme also uses the Virtual Learning Environment platform to teach English and will impact schools with over 20,000 students and 5,700 urban underprivileged families to benefit from the programme in Sentul.

The event at Auditorium DBKL also saw teachers Anis Nordinie Azizan from SK St Mary and Rajamani winning Best Teacher awards with a cash prize of RM3,000 each.

Anis said she would use the money to plant vegetables and use the profits to help poor students and orphanages.

“I will use the money to help poor students and the less fortunate,” said Rajamani.
