Low-income families can now stay in fully furnished homes for only RM1 while caring for sick relatives warded at hospitals.
Two double-storey houses in Taman Puchong Utama have been renovated by Community Policing Malaysia (CPM) into transit homes for them.
CPM founder Kuan Chee Heng said one house could accommodate two to three families at a time.
“There is space for up to 18 people as there are seven rooms in each house.
“Many families need a place to live while looking after relatives in hospital. They can stay here for as long as they have a family member warded.
“We will also open these houses to victims of domestic abuse and people who have lost their homes in fires,” said Kuan.
The houses are fully furnished and all rooms have air-conditioning.
Occupants must clean up after themselves and are only allowed to cook and consume halal food.
CPM also provided six cars and three ambulances at the cost of 10 sen for those needing assistance to go to hospitals nearby.
They include Kajang Plaza Medical Centre, Hospital Sungai Buloh, University Malaya Medical Centre, Hospital Putrajaya and Hospital Serdang.
Kuan hoped to have five more transit homes by the end of this year.
“All I wish is that the people who stay here will spread kindness to others when they are able to,” he said.
In order to sustain the transit houses, Kuan has garnered donations and other forms of pledges from the 228,714 Facebook followers of CPM.
One generous donor was businessman Datuk Paul Lim, who spent RM80,000 to renovate both houses.
“I have pledged to contribute RM4,500 each month for the rent and utility bills for these houses.
“Kuan is a good friend and I have always supported his charitable efforts,” said Low.
