SECTION 10 residents in Petaling Jaya are upset that a carpark project they had earlier objected to seems set to take place.

Section 10 Residents Association president Ronald Danker said during a meeting between the residents and Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) a year ago, they were told that the Taman Jaya carpark would be connected to the existing free carpark in their neighbourhood near the Satellite Chicken Rice shop.

“We had objected to the proposal then but a few weeks ago, a notice board was erected on a vacant piece of land between the existing free carpark and the Taman Jaya carpark.

“It was stated on the notice board that a connecting carpark would be built and the project is expected to be completed by July 13,” said Danker, adding that residents were not informed about it.

He added residents had several queries about the project as they believe it would have a major impact on them.

“We are worried that more motorists will be using our neighbourhood roads,” he said.

Danker added that the project should not adversely affect the residents.

“It should not increase traffic flow here.

“If the project is continued, we want fences to separate the carpark from the residential area.

“We suggest that vehicles only be allowed to come out through Jalan 10/1.

“Another option would be to build a new road to join Jalan Timur. At the end of Jalan 10/7, there should be a no-entry sign,” said Danker.

He also said residents would like to see some of the vacant land used for a dog park.

On a different matter, he questioned the need to change the streetlights that were functioning well.

“We noticed even those near Assunta Hospital have been changed. Why waste council funds?” asked Danker.

When contacted, Petaling Jaya mayor Mohd Azizi Mohd Zain said he welcomed residents’ suggestions.

“We will look into them,” he said.

On the need to change the streetlights, Azizi said they were replaced with LED bulbs under a project which began last year.

“The LED ones are brighter and more cost effective.

“We are changing the lights in most neighbourhoods in phases,” said Azizi.
