RESIDENTS along two roads in George Town, Penang, are unhappy with the sudden fencing up of a plot of land behind their row of houses.
Seven houses along Argyll Road and nine houses along Jalan Dato Koyah are said to be affected by the fencing erected too close to the back exits of the houses.
Richard Wong, 52, who lives in one of the houses facing Argyll Road, said people started barricading the plot along Jalan Dato Koyah which extended to the back lane of the houses.
“We do not know who is barricading it but we know that the land belongs to Penang Island City Council (MBPP).
“The plot of land is also covering the access to our sewage system,” he told a press conference held by Gerakan’s Padang Kota constituency coordinator H’ng Khoon Leng at the site on Tuesday.
Wong said he had approached MBPP twice, once on April 7 and on Monday.
“I have given them a verbal complaint and they said they will look into the matter.”
Resident Foo Siang Chee, 75, who runs a bakery along Argyll Road, said he had been operating the bakery for 65 years and used the back lane to park his car.
“The fencing will completely block access to the back of our housing units.”
H’ng said the land belonged to MBPP but was given on tender to a private developer in 2013.
“There has been no development until a few weeks ago.
“There is no sign or notice to inform the residents on what will be built,” he added.
A MBPP spokesman declined to comment when contacted.
