Blessed with creative minds, good interior designers offer the best design services that combine inspired aesthetics, smart investment in well-designed spaces, and sound business sense to their clients.
The Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID) is the body representing the interior design profession in Malaysia. MIID envisions the continuous development and grooming of future generations of talented Malaysian interior designers to meet the challenges of a constantly evolving industry by conducting various programmes throughout the year to educate, promote and foster better ties between the public and professional members.
Part of the institute’s knowledge exchange platforms and activities include the annual lecture series where leading industry practitioners are invited to have discourse and share their ideas and work. MIID holds exhibitions highlighting members’ work, event workshops, conferences and seminars as well as various capacity building in the area of creative digital media communication and professional practice.
Another key responsibility of MIID is to undertake an advisory role between the Malaysian interior design profession and various statutory bodies. It actively engages with international and regional design bodies to constantly upgrade the skills of industry professionals.
“One of our key priorities now would be to raise awareness that people must hire registered professional interior designers. This would protect consumers and the public at large, ensuring that they are receiving quality design services. And if there’s a shortfall in the services rendered, they have legal recourse in protecting their rights,” said MIID president Lai Siew Hong.
“This is why we need to always nurture and develop young talented Interior Designers, such that they can go forward and create the interior environments of tomorrow. But the trust of the client(s)/public in Interior Designers’ abilities and integrity must always be there,” he said.
Lai shared that despite the Covid-19 pandemic, MIID still has a number of development webinars and conferences that they plan to host, in addition to the ones MIID had successfully hosted to date. “We encourage all Malaysian Architects, Interior Design professionals and graduates to join us and become MIID members. Once you have signed up, there are many opportunities to develop your skills further, acquire more knowledge and network with design industry members and partners.
“We can help you take your career to the next level. At present, we have approximately 3,000 MIID members and we look towards growing this number significantly,” he added.
MIID has several types of membership open to qualified interior designers, namely those aspiring to be interior designers, suppliers to the building industry, and professionals in related fields. All applicants are assessed for their suitability according to set criteria to ensure proper quality of membership at all levels.
Malaysian interior design students and graduates begin their path as Student or Graduate members. The route thereon is to become an Ordinary (Corporate) member, followed later, upon nomination, conferment as a Fellow of the Institute, after many years of professional practice and having contributed positively to the institute and profession.
Graduate members must register their qualifications with the Board of Architects Malaysia or Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia (LAM), the governing statutory body. After graduating with a minimum of three and a half years of full-time study (preferably from a LAM accredited programme), having obtained professional experience, and passing the LAM Interior Design Licensure Exam, Graduate members can gain admittance to membership of MIID as an Ordinary (Corporate) member.
MIID is a learned institution and professional body steered and lead by a council of elected members. Its mission is to encourage and support good design and competence through continuing professional development and education. Membership of MIID provides opportunities to network with other designers, allied professionals and industry players.
