THERE seems to be confusion over the cost of the 1km walkway that has been built along Jalan Indah in Taman Cheras Indah, Ampang, among nearby residents.
Teratai Gerakan public complaints bureau chief Ben Liew, who called for a press conference, raised questions about the project.
He said the walkway cost “a lot”, considering it was not covered, had no fences and did not have tactile pavement for the blind.
He said Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ), Teratai assemblyman Tiew Way Keng, and the Selangor state government should explain the RM850,508 spent on it.
When asked how much a walkway should cost, he said: “I don’t know how much a walkway like this would cost, but as a layman, I would know it wouldn’t cost this much.”
Liew also questioned the condition of the walkway, which seemed incomplete and damaged in some areas despite being new.
On Nov 2, StarMetro had reported that Taman Cheras Indah residents could rejoice as the pothole-ridden Jalan Indah and the damaged walkway along the road had been repaired.
The report stated that the upgrade cost RM850,508, and that this was part of the RM4.9mil allocated under the Malaysian Road Records Inventory System (Marris) funds.
When contacted to clarify the matter, Zone 20 councillor Holly Ho Lee Hien said Liew should check his facts first.
“The upgrading works of the main road and the walkway cost RM850,508, and not the walkway alone,” she said.
She said the 1km Jalan Indah road had been resurfaced.
“We are aware of some damage to the walkway but it was due to collapsed drain, and MPAJ has recently fixed it.
“The contractor will fix the walkway soon or else they will not get their project deposit if the job is not completed,” she said.
Tiew said: “MPAJ tendered out the project. It was not given through direct negotiation.”
