FOR over two years now, most roads in Petaling Jaya have been riddled with hazardous potholes and deep pits making it a danger to both pedestrians and motorists as the roads are being dug up for comprehensive sewerage upgrading work all over the city.
There have also been many near misses of collisions as there is a lack of traffic control at the sewerage work sites.
Initiated by the Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry (Kettha), the project includes laying new sewer pipelines via the pipe-jacking and open-cut methods.
Implemented in stages, this project is scheduled for completion within four years from 2013. Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK) is the project consultant and the Sewerage Services Department (JPP) is the implementing agency.
Carrying out the works are four different contractors, namely Mangkubumi Sdn Bhd, Cipta Wawasan Maju Engineering Sdn Bhd (CWM), Unipenta Sdn Bhd and Jaks Sdn Bhd.
All of them operate at different locations -- Mangkubumi in Petaling Jaya North, Unipenta in Section 17 and Sungai Ara while the other two are focused on Petaling Jaya South.
Both residents and local leaders have complained about shoddy work by contractors multiple times since 2013.
MBPJ cannot revoke the work permits because it is not the appointing body, so it is up to IWK to take stern action like withholding payment or terminating the errant contractor’s services.
By issuing stop-work orders, MBPJ can compel the contractors to meet its requirements such as restoring the roads back to good condition.
To help you know better the contractors, areas and roads involved, StarMetro gives you the rundown on the Underground Sewerage System Upgrading project.
