RESIDENTS in Taman Melawis, Klang, are still waiting for desilting to be carried out on two monsoon drains to curb flash floods.
With the high tide phenomena starting today, Serjeet Singh lamented the laid-back attitude of the private contractor in charge of the area.
He claimed the Klang Municipal Council’s (MPK) zone supervisor had also been lackadaisical in carrying out his duties.
“Our neighbourhood sits on low ground and it is vital an immediate clean-up is done because of the high-tide phenomenon.
“We want workers to clean up the stretch of monsoon drain from Kg Martin off Jalan Teluk Pulai that runs parallel behind Jalan Lintang Besi until the end of Jalan Emas.
“Another monsoon drain that needs attention is the one from Jalan Teluk Pulai, running parallel along the rail tracks passing the end of Lorong Loyang until Jalan Emas,” said Serjeet.
Ariffin Arshad said the arrival of high tide, coupled with a downpour and strong winds, will make Taman Melawis residents anxious.
“We want MPK to desilt the drains immediately as some parts are choked with rubbish and overgrown weeds so water cannot flow,” he added.
On Sept 19, StarMetro reported Taman Melawis residents were frustrated the flood mitigation project had not started despite having been approved in 2016.
They said each time it rains continuously for 45 minutes, water will enter their front porch, backyard and kitchen.
Selangor Infrastructure, Public Amenities and Agro-Based Industry Committee chairman Zaidy Abdul Talib said work to alleviate flash floods in Taman Melawis, including the building of a concrete diversion culvert under a rail track and the widening of a monsoon drain, would begin in the first quarter of 2018.
He said technical problems had delayed the implementation of the project.
