JOHOR BARU: A single mother has been living in fear for almost eight months as a group of loan sharks has been harassing her to settle a loan she did not take.

Clerk Chaan Shy Mey, 33, said her ordeal began last August when her tenant, a furniture worker from Kulim, Kedah, left her house at Taman Mesra in Ulu Tiram here without informing her.

She said, a few days later, four men showed up at her house, calling out his name and demanding that he came out.

“I told them that the person they were looking for no longer stayed at my house anymore,” she said.

“However, the four men kept telling me that my former tenant owed them money. I told them to look for the man elsewhere,” said Chaan.

“But, they showed me a copy of my MyKad and quit rent, both of which my former tenant used to get loans of more than RM7,000,” she said at a press conference arranged by Johor MCA Public Services and Complaints Bureau chief Kua Song Tuck at the Southern Chinese Press Club here yesterday.

Chaan said she asked the ah Long to leave her and her family be.

“Instead, they told me that since my documents were used to get the loan, I must pay the full amount owed to them and a RM500 fee immediately.

“Since then, they have been harassing me. Recently, they splashed red paint on my car and front porch,” she said, adding that she had made several police reports.

Kua said the actions of these loan sharks were too much as they were bullying the victim to pay someone else’s debt.

When contacted, Seri Alam OCPD Supt Jokhiri Abdul Aziz, confirmed that reports had been lodged over the matter.

He said police were investigating the matter and urged those with information to contact the state police hotline at 07-221 2999 or lodge a report at the nearest police station.
