RESIDENTS living near the Selayang Makmur apartment are furious with Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) for not taking action against the apartment’s Joint Management Body (JMB), claiming the JMB is carrying out extensions to build shoplots and other facilities without the council’s consent.
The residents lodged an official complaint with MPS on June 21 and said no action had been taken yet.
Resident Tamil Selvam Sundararajan, 49, who has been residing here since 1985, said residents staying in double-storey houses along Jalan 8F in Selayang Baru, which is located next to the apartments, had been angered to learn of the proposed facilities.
He said there were three blocks of apartments — A, B and C — with 285 units.
“The empty land in Block C, which used to be a green area, is the site of the proposed shoplots.
“Also, behind Block C, there is a proposal to build a futsal court, community hall and playground on a plot of land less than 0.4ha. This is ridiculous and does not make sense.
“Meanwhile, the existing futsal courts located at Block A and B, where cars are also parked, will be turned into another row of shoplots.
“At present, apartment residents park their vehicles on the shoulder of Jalan 2 as there is not enough bays in their carpark. With shoplots being built, it will cause traffic chaos here.
“When we checked with MPS, it was unaware of the development and found that the original proposal and approval were different from the works taking place.
“There is also no signage informing the public of any project or development taking place in the area,” he said.
Ng Kang Wei, 29, who stays in Jalan 8F Selayang Baru, beside Block C, said trees were chopped down for the work being undertaken.
“This used to be a green area with many fruit trees.
“If there are shoplots opposite my house, the road will become congested. At present the road is already so narrow.
Another resident, K. Samy said MPS should stop the project immediately.
“On June 21, we sent an objection letter to MPS and the Gombak Land Office with about 100 signatures attached.
“In our objection letter, it is stated that residents have been using this green area in Block C for the last 15 years to hold social gathering and as a playground,” he said.
When contacted, MPS public relations officer Ahmad Fauzi Ishak said the council would organise a meeting with the residents after Hari Raya.
Taman Selayang Makmur JMB chairman Roger Irvine, said that out of 285 units, only 50 households paid the maintenance of RM30 monthly to the JMB.
“This project was approved in 2014 by the MPS Commissioner of Buildings (COB) to develop and cleanup the area.
“The apartments used to be dirty and we want to beautify it to improve the quality of life for residents.
“We plan to demolish the futsal courts and build new and more improved facilities, including a futsal court and community hall.
“We will create 42 more parking bays for residents. At present, there are 162 parking bays.
“The complainants from apartment residents are made by those with a vested interest as they have already set up shops and restaurants in the building.
“Those staying opposite, on the other hand, are angry because they used to use the empty plot of land to park their vehicles,” he claimed.
