BANGSAR residents are frustrated that shoddy extension work of Bangsar Baru Sports Complex had delayed completion of the work several times.

The extension from the main building, which consists of a male and female gymnasium and a holding room, was not given a certificate of fitness by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) as it did not follow the minimum standards of the local authority.

Complex supervisor Mohamad Syamin Safian said he saw rainwater seeping into the ground floor of the gymnasium.

“I was checking the upgrading works one day and I saw water flowing to the ground floor.

“The windows were not properly installed as they rattle when we apply pressure.

“This is very dangerous as an accident might happen when gym users lean on the glass” he said.

The extension was built to replace an old spectators’ stand after the football field was rebuilt into tennis courts.

The extension is completed but it is not approved by DBKL as some of the specifications are not up to mark.

Bangsar Baru Residents Association chairman Datuk George Joseph said the construction of the extension started three years ago but until today, it had yet to open to the public.

“The construction is taking too long and there has been several changes in the building contractor.

“It has taken them almost three years although this is just a simple project,” he said.

Joseph also said residents from the area had been waiting for a long time to use the gymnasium.

“One of the squash courts is being converted into a gym room but the area is not conducive.

“The gym equipment is old and some of the exercise machines are not working.

“We are glad that DBKL allowed the extension as the residents here need a gym room and new gym equipment,” he said, urging DBKL to expedite the completion of the extension at the complex.

DBKL could not be reached for comments at press time.
