KUALA LUMPUR: Smoke from a small fire started billowing in a popular shopping mall here Tuesday evening, causing chaos among shoppers.
Smoke was detected on the lower ground floor of the shopping mall at around 8.15pm and a call was immediately placed to the Fire and Rescue Department.
Witnesses at the scene also said they noticed a strong smell similar to an electrical burn. The fire is believed to have started in a small room on the third floor and was immediately brought under control.
When contacted, the City Fire and Rescue Department Operations Centre said the small room housed a PVC pipe laden with rubbish, and a lit cigarette butt could have started the fire.
As at 10pm, fire investigation officers were still determining the actual cause of the fire.
"We are also ensuring that there are no other substances that can cause a similar incident again," said a Bomba spokesman.
No one was directly injured in the fire.
Amidst the chaos, shoppers also found a woman receiving medical attention at the mall. According to the mall's spokesman, the woman is believed to have a medical condition and was sent to a nearby hospital for treatment.
