SHAH Alam City Council’s (MBSA) move towards achieving a low-carbon and green city status is progressing well, said Shah Alam mayor Datuk Ahmad Zaharin Mohd Saad.

He said the city council’s initiative in educating the public, especially hawkers and traders, on the zero-plastic campaign reflected the effectiveness of its various initiatives towards the green city concept.

Ahmad Zaharin said the zero-polystyrene campaign, launched at the start of this year, had achieved a 100% result in Shah Alam.

He said it was evident from the fact that none of the hawkers in the city were using polystyrene boxes to supply food for take-away orders.

“Polystyrene box was something that we could not be without in the past but it is no more the case now.

“This shows that our efforts to contribute towards creating a greener state has brought positive result,” he said during his visit to the Ramadan baazar in Section 13, Shah Alam, along with state environment committee chairman Elizabeth Wong.

Ahmad Zaharin also urged customers to bring along their own carrier bags when shopping at the bazaars.

All parties including the public, he said, were required to play their roles towards achieving the green city objective.

On the Ramadan bazaars in the state in general, Wong said she was satisfied to see the traders had strictly followed the state’s ruling on the usage of polystyrene boxes and plastic bags.

“We are heading in the right direction and we can see for ourselves how we are able to save the environment by not using polystyrene boxes and minimise usage of plastic bags,” she added
