Eco-developer S P Setia wins award for world-class integrated convention centre on Penang Island
Being a frontrunner as an eco-developer, S P Setia has always pledged to place sustainability in high regard. This commitment has resulted in the Setia SPICE Convention Centre grabbing The WOW Award for the most iconic commercial development presented by the StarProperty.my Awards 2018.
Through the collaboration of S P Setia and the Penang state government, the Setia SPICE project is to realise a vision of establishing the state as a premier destination for world-class events. It is located in the heart of Bayan Lepas on Penang island, a mere five-minute drive from the Penang International Airport and close to the Free Trade Zone.
The word SPICE is an abbreviation for Subterranean Penang International Convention and Exhibition Centre. The project development is made up of five elements; SPICE Convention Centre, SPICE Arena, SPICE Aquatic Centre, SPICE Canopy and a business-class hotel.
Unique eco features of an award-winning project
Touted as the First Hybrid Solar-Powered Convention Centre in the World, Setia SPICE is also Eco Green (GBI) certified.
A unique feature of Setia SPICE is the RM4mil solar photovoltaic (PV) system, which can generate up to 980MWh a year, that has been added to the roof of the Setia SPICE Aquatic Centre.
It is the biggest commercial solar PV farm in Penang and helps supplement Setia SPICE Convention Centre’s electricity consumption.
The Setia SPICE Convention Centre has a 4,000sq metre pillar-less ballroom, with unobstructed views of the stage, and can accommodate 400 round banquet tables or 8,000 theatre seats for any conference.
For bigger events, the grand ballroom is fronted by 2,000sq metres of grand foyer that can be used as overflow space to accommodate another 150 banquet tables. With its gracious decor and natural ambient lighting, the grand foyer area offers a stunning and friendly space for interaction.
The convention centre is also supported by 13 function rooms of various sizes and a six-acre landscaped roof garden which has a special needs children’s playground, a bamboo park as well as the largest urban spice garden in Malaysia.
It has also been awarded by the Malaysia Book of Records as the Largest Subterranean Pillarless Ballroom in Malaysia and the Largest Recreational Park in Malaysia.
Uninterrupted event space with wide range of facilities
The Setia SPICE Arena underwent a major revamp and now has a range of state-of-the-art facilities, making it one of the most ideal venues to host international events.
Once known as the Penang International Sports Arena, the Setia SPICE Arena is a multi-purpose indoor stadium with 33,000sq ft of uninterrupted space surrounded by 10,000 terrace seats.
A 42,000sq ft circular concourse located on Level 3 connects to the arena through multiple access points and serves as added space for exhibitions, receptions, hi-teas, fairs and product launches.
One-stop destination for business and leisure
Setia SPICE Canopy is a one-stop lifestyle venue comprising 59 retail, food & beverage units catering to Penang’s best and international cuisine at a single location. Setia SPICE Canopy compliments the SPICE development as a one-stop destination for both business and leisure.
Setia SPICE Aquatic Centre provides a choice of both wet and dry activities. Highlights include the largest indoor Olympic-size swimming pool and a kids play pool with salt water treatment, 3-tier diving platform, lounge, dance studios, badminton and squash courts, gymnasium and viewing terrace seats.
Adjacent to the Convention Centre will be a business-class hotel consisting of 453 rooms earmarked for completion in 2020. The hotel will be connected to the convention centre, providing the best experience for conference and convention delegates.
