MOST of us love spending time in parks, so it is no surprise that in Petaling Jaya’s Section 10, residents take pride in Taman Jaya – or “the gardens”, as they call it.
Section 10 Residents Association (S10RA) president Ronald Danker said the park provided a space for people to interact with each other and meet new people.
“Our neighbourhood is blessed with ‘the gardens’ as it is good for recreational activities and even a picnic.
“The trees, shrubs and lake help in reducing the urban heat emitting from the asphalt and concrete,” said Danker, who loves the greenery.
He added that nature was crucial for the healthy development of children.
Section 10 is made up of 310 households, out of which 198 are registered members of S10RA while the rest are occupied by tenants made up of students from varsities and expatriates.
S10RA charges a RM20 annual fee, and the money is used for various activities and their year-end dinner.
Danker said Section 10 was, for most part, a residential area with the only non-residential part being a row of shophouses that faced Jalan Gasing, the Marists Brothers Training Centre and SM Catholic High School along Jalan 10/3, and the St Francis Xavier Church.
Section 10 is located on the intersection betwen Jalan Gasing and Federal Highway, two crucial roads in Petaling Jaya, making its location strategic.
Danker added that Section 10 was first developed in the 1960s with double- and single-storey terrace houses. Back then, senior workers from the National Electricity Board were given priority to purchase the units.
Senior citizens who live in the area enjoy walks to AmCorp Mall, which is just five to 10 minutes via Taman Jaya – mostly under the shade of trees. A little further down is PJ New Town, where the banks and eateries are located.
