PETALING JAYA: The Real Estate and Housing Developers’ Association (Rehda) is focusing on proactive steps to nurture resilient, sustainable and liveable cities, in areas of social inclusiveness, affordability and accessibility, for its 13th International Conference on World Class Sustainable Cities (WCSC 2022).

Endorsed by Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Mahadi Che Ngah and Kuala Lumpur City Hall, the theme for the conference is KL2040: Towards a liveable urban future, which will take place on Sept 13 at the Royale Chulan Kuala Lumpur Hotel.

“Moving forward, Kuala Lumpur and other major cities will need to plan and prepare a comprehensive blueprint to face challenges resulting from the new normal in terms of climate change, technology disruptions, and demographic changes, to name a few in order to continue building a resilient urban future with a good quality of life for its people,” said WCSC 2022 organising chairman Chan Jin-Wy.

“Kuala Lumpur as a city is making marked changes with utilising the strategies for improvement including walkability, connectivity, robustness of the inner city and sustainability, advocating for more sustainable, low carbon and green buildings towards becoming a carbon-neutral nation by the year 2050,” Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) president Sarly Adre Sarkum said.

Confirmed international and local speakers include Mahadi, Australia’s Melbourne mayor Sally Capp and Brisbane city council chief planner Dyan Currie and Turenscape founder Kongjian Yu from China. 

As part of the WCSC 2022 programme, concurrent events and activities are being organised including workshops, with one targeted specifically towards the youths, a photography competition, and a welcome dinner. 

“This year’s 1-day symposium will feature an exciting line-up of distinguished World-Class international and local speakers including panellists from Australia, China and Malaysia.  They are globally renowned for their innovative ideas and solutions towards the present and future urban planning issues and challenges in achieving the global goal of sustainable development, low carbon, resilient & liveable cities,” Malaysian Institute of Planners president Datin Noraida Saludin said.  

DBKL representative Sharifah Athirah Izyan Wan Kassim, Rehda KL chairman Ra Adrina Muztaza, MIP vice president Datin Mazrina Abdul Khalid, PAM council member Datuk Zulkhairi Zain and Rehda KL assistant secretary Lee Han Rick was also present at the event.
