OHOR BARU: Following the East West Link project which was proposed during the Ninth Malaysian Plan, the authorities need to resolve several problems before proceeding, for a better highway planning which involves Jalan Tebrau, said Stulang assemblyman Andrew Chen Kah Eng.
He said there was a lot of room for improvement along the road such as installing barriers at the pedestrian crossing, better walkways next to drains and installing closed circuit televisions (CCTV) at bus stops.
He added that upon checking at several bus stops along the road, he noticed that there was a signage saying that the bus stop is under CCTV supervision 24-hours but that there was no CCTV installed.
“The local council should also warn bus operators and place their men at the overhead bridge in front of Plaza Pelangi to stop buses from picking up and dropping passengers as it causes traffic congestion in the area.
“On top of that, they should also instal the traffic lights digital numbering system along Jalan Tebrau to ease traffic as well as place drain covers or barriers along Taman Abad and Taman Sri Tebrau as it is dangerous for pedestrians at night,” he said in a press conference held at Jalan Tebrau.
He added that the authorities should consider all these problems when constructing a better highway that passes through the city.
“I will send a memorandum to address all the problems to the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB), Public Works Department (JKR) and bus companies involved in picking and dropping passengers at the undesignated areas soon.
“If the authorities decided to start with the RM275mil highway project soon, I hope they will consider all these problems first before proceeding with the plans to provide a safer highway for everybody,” he said.
The project, which was expected to be implemented between 2004 and 2010, will start from Taman Pelangi Indah and end at Taman Kota Masai, connecting over 12 townships including the densely populated Taman Gaya and Taman Ehsan Jaya.
The completion of the highway would enable motorists to travel between Kota Masai and Jalan Tebrau without having to go through the Pasir Gudang highway known for its traffic congestion.
Meanwhile, MBJB mayor A. Rahim Nin said that he has taken note of all the problems raised and would look into this matter soon, along with the MBJB technical department officers as well as JKR officers involved.
