THE announcement by Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor to eventually do away with parking bays in future commercial developments in Kuala Lumpur’s central business district received intense public backlash.
While some cited convenience in driving to work, others said they would give public transportation a chance.
Bank officer Vinnie Poon, 35, who works at Jalan Tun Perak prefers using public transportation as she travels quite a distance from her home in Puchong.
“If I were to drive it would be tiring, especially with the traffic jam. But I can spend the time productively by catching up on reading on the LRT,” she said.
She also said while there was slight improvement in the city’s pedestrian infrastructure, more needed to be done.
However, Poon conceded that driving would allow for more flexibility.
Interior designer P.Y.Tham, 28, finds the public transportation system too slow and prefers driving.
“Even during non-peak hours, the frequency of the KTM is uncertain.
“The transport system to and from the city centre has to be improved dramatically before they can do away with parking bays, otherwise it will defeat the purpose,” she said.
Senior analyst Ivy Yap, 28, said more coaches were needed to encourage people to use the train service.
“If there are less parking bays in future developments, people will crowd the trains.
“If this situation is not improved, it will not be conducive to travel to work,” she said, adding that she used the train to commute to her workplace in Pudu.
Web application developer Too Heng Kit, 28, who works in Dang Wangi prefers driving to work because public transportation was not up to par.
“I travel during non-peak hours to work and traffic is not a problem for me.
“If there is really no choice, then I will opt for public transport, but there is no train station within walking distance from my house,” said Too who lives in Jalan Kuchai Lama.
