FLASH floods and snakes have plagued the residents of Jalan Taman Mawar Section 5 in Puchong for the past eight years.
Due to poor maintenance of the drains outside their houses, residents on Jalan TK 5/8 claimed the small drains are not able to manage the high capacity of rainwater that overflowed into their homes.
Sairi Kamar, 79, a resident of 23 years, said he was worried that the flash floods were more frequent during the wet season.
“When it rains for more than three hours, the rain water will flood our houses by at least 10cm high.
“It has been at least eight years since the council did any maintenance of the drains in front of our houses and at the back.
“The drains have become shallow and the roads have not been resurfaced, so whenever it rains there will be pools of water on the road.
“On top of that, our assessment tax was raised from RM130 to RM163 this year. We are paying so much but nothing is being fixed or maintained,” he said.
There are 40 houses in Jalan Taman Mawar Section 5 and the fleet of houses are situated on lower ground with a monsoon drain parallel to houses on Jalan TK 5/11.
The overgrowth of trees and shrubs within the drains have clogged them and caused more snakes to enter their homes.
Another resident Lam Chan Moy, 63, said she and a few residents were forced to take matters into their own hands by building a wall behind their home to raise the barrier keep the snakes out.
“I have called the Fire and Rescue department twice to catch the snakes in my backyard.
“One of it was a python. I have even caught two smaller snakes.
“The council should send contractors to clear the trees in the monsoon drain to prevent the clogging because there is only so much we can do on our own,” she said.
Puchong MCA division secretary Liew Yew Fook said he made an official complaint regarding the matter to Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ).
“MPSJ and the local assemblyman are supposed to take responsibility over this matter, by ensuring the roads and drains are maintained properly.
“The drains are far too small and shallow and they must be upgraded,” he said.
