KUALA Lumpur Opposition MPs are calling city dwellers to sign a petition to push for the draft Kuala Lumpur City Plan 2020 (DKLCP 2020) to be gazetted.
They said the development in the city was out of control with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) approving projects exceeding maximum density of 400 people per 0.4ha and allowing government land and public spaces to be used for commercial purposes.
The MPs together with lawyer Derek Fernandez, whose expertise is in town planning and local government, took part in a forum in Kuala Lumpur to bring awareness of the importance of gazetting the plan.
Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar said DBKL was already struggling to provide good infrastructure with the hefty RM2.8bil allocation and doubted how it would cope with more development.
Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai pointed out that some RM30mil had been spent since the draft plan’s launch in 2008 and not gazetting it would be a waste of taxpayers’ money
Batu MP Tian Chua talked about poor quality of life and the insecurity of property buyers not knowing if a green patch or open space that existed while purchasing would be permanent.
Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng questioned why the 18 projects linked to the corruption case which involved a senior DBKL staff were not given a stop-work order pending investigation.
“The plan can be gazetted and amendments can be done later if required. There are processes for that.
“Working without a plan is like planning to fail,” said Fernandez.
