GEORGE TOWN: Taxi drivers here are on a four-hour strike to protest against Uber and GrabCar services in the state.
Penang Taxi Associate Association (Gabungan) secretary Mohamad Shahimi Hadzri urged the Federal government and Cabinet to reconsider legalising Uber and GrabCar.
“The Government needs to remember that we are also voters here in Penang. We taxi drivers used to earn over RM200 a day. Now we barely earn RM50 a day. How can we survive like this,” he questioned while speaking to the press at the protest in Esplanade on Wednesday morning.
He added that if Sabah could ban Uber and GrabCar, Penang and the rest of Malaysia should follow suit.
Some 200 cabbies gathered in solidarity for the protest which will go on from 10am to 2pm.
