The overhead pedestrian bridge along Jalan Masjid Negeri has fallen into disrepair.

AN overhead pedestrian bridge along Jalan Masjid Negeri in Penang, has become an eyesore with its roof damaged, exposing the walkway to the sun and rain.

A check by The Star photographer Chan Boon Kai yesterday found that several pieces of the roof, made of polycarbonate sheets, had actually gone missing.

The sharp edges of the broken roof are also jutting out precariously, posing a danger to the pedestrians.

Housewife R. Nithya, 47, who has been using the bridge daily, said the remaining roof sheets along the walkway could fall anytime.

“The facility once served as a shelter for pedestrians from rain and sun but not anymore,” she said when met yesterday.

Penang Island City Council Infrastructure and Traffic Committee alternate chairman Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik said the overhead pedestrian bridge was sponsored by a private company.

“Our engineers have sent an urgent notice to the company to alert it about the current condition of the roofing.

“We have asked the company to start immediate repair works. We will keep tabs on the situation,” he said.
