A TOTAL of 130 resident groups received RM780,000 in funding from Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) under the Petaling Jaya Neighbourhood Safety Team Programme (PKKPJ) this year.
Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Mohd Azizi Mohd Zain presented the allocation to representatives of the organisations, comprising 81 residents associations (RA), 33 Rukun Tetangga (RT) and 16 Joint Management Bodies (JMB).
Each selected organisation received RM6,000 for voluntary security patrols in their respective neighbourhood.
Mohd Azizi said the allocation was a gesture of MBPJ’s support for activities related to crime prevention, to encourage residents groups to apply for neighbourhood security incentives, to increase the number of voluntary security patrol members, and to promote the PKKPJ programme among Petaling Jaya folk.
MBPJ was the first local council in Malaysia to launch and provide funding for such a security programme, with RM5,000 allocated for each RA and RT back in 2011.
In 2014, the programme was extended to JMBs of low-cost flats, subject to certain conditions.
The PKKPJ programme started with 55 successful applicants in 2011. The number of applicants steadily increased every year, with 113 successful applicants recorded last year.
“We set aside RM900,000 under MBPJ’s budget for the PKKPJ programme this year.
“As we expect an increase in applications for next year, we are planning to increase the allocation to RM1.3mil under next year’s budget,” said Mohd Azizi.
“We hope the contribution for PKKPJ will go towards reducing the burden of crime prevention measures in residential neighbourhoods,” he said, adding that MBPJ was willing to provide assistance and advice where needed.
In his speech, Mohd Azizi also thanked the police and Department Of National Unity and Integration for their support.
At the presentation ceremony, the mayor also launched the PKKPJ portal that would facilitate the submission of reports and management of allocations online.
