The Government has successfully revived 190 housing projects abandoned over the past nine years, said Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Tan Sri Noh Omar.
He said this amounted to 75% of the 253 private housing projects abandoned between 2009 and July this year.
“The revived projects benefited 34,451 buyers,” he said told Datuk Normala Abdul Samad (BN-Pasir Gudang).
He said 32 of the projects were revived using Government funds totalling RM219.54mil and benefited 5,079 buyers.
Noh said 15 abandoned projects or 6% were at various stages of construction while 48 others were at the revival planning stage.
He added that funding priority was given to lower and medium-cost projects where homes cost RM65,000 and below.
Noh acknowledged there were instances where developers appointed by the Government to revive a particular project had themselves run into problems.
To address the issue of abandoned housing projects, Noh said, the law was amended in 2015 to compel developers to deposit 3% of the total value of their projects with the Housing Development Fund compared to just RM200,000 previously.
