PONTIAN: Tanjung Bin will be just minutes away from Tanjung Pelepas in Gelang Patah here once a RM650mil road linking them is completed by 2020. Currently, it takes one hour to get from Tanjung Bin to Tanjung Pelepas.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the Tanjung Bin-Gelang Patah road and bridge project is slated for completion in 36 months and the new road will benefit those working in Pontian, especially the Tanjung Bin power plant as well as the eco-tourism sector.

He said work on the 7.5km road, which includes a bridge over Sungai Pulai, is set to start in September.

The funds, he said, are mostly federal government allocations.

Pontian is also home to the Tanjung Piai National Park at the southernmost tip of mainland Asia is located.

He said the four-lane road links Pontian to Gelang Patah and Johor Baru as well as the Second Link to Singapore. Motorists will take about 30 minutes to reach Tuas using the Second Link.

“The aim is to make it more convenient for road users to travel between Pontian and Iskandar Puteri and Johor Baru as the typically 50km journey will be shortened to about 15km,” he said.

The announcement was made by Mohamed Khaled during his visit to the Tanjung Piai parliamentary constituency yesterday.

He said they were waiting for the green light from the Public Works Department to approve the plans before opening tender by the end of April.

“I believe this project will bring economic benefits to the people and we urge them to embrace it,” he added.

On a separate issue, he said the state has agreed to acquire 12.14ha of land in Mukim Jeram Batu here at a cost of RM7mil.

He said funds collected under Tabung Hartanah Bumiputra from developers who applied to change the status of unsold bumiputra lots (that are non-low cost or affordable units) to non-bumiputra status, made this possible.

“Without the fund, we might not be able to afford (such an acquisition) as the price of land is increasing,” he added.
