Flooded in a flash: Cars splashing through the muddy waters in Logan Road after heavy rain in George Town.
BUTTERWORTH: Several areas on the mainland were hit by flash floods including Taman Bagan where residents described it as the worst deluge in the last 10 years.
About 250 houses in Taman Cantik, 100 houses in Taman Bagan and 70 more in Taman Kerapu were inundated yesterday.
According to Taman Bagan flood committee chairman Goay Weng Leng, at the height of the floods, the water reached up to 0.6m.
“This is the worst flood incident to hit our area in the last 10 years.
“The Prai River also burst its banks,” he said, adding that rubbish clogged the trash screen of the tidal gate.
State Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the flood waters were below the danger level of 2.1m.
“About 70 houses were also affected near Seberang Jaya,” he said.
Meanwhile, several low-lying areas in George Town were also flooded from about 6pm.
Among the badly hit areas were P. Ramlee Road, Anson Road and Logan Road which were submerged in knee-deep water.
The floods also caused traffic jams at the Anson Road-Macalister Road traffic light junction and also at the Perak Road-Jalan P. Ramlee intersection.
