KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak launched tunnelling works for the MRT Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya (SSP) Line at Bandar Malaysia here Thursday (March 1).
Najib was given the honour of starting the massive tunnel boring machine, which will bore some 13.5km for the underground section of the proposed 52.2km-long SSP Line.
The SSP Line is the second under the Klang Valley MRT project and will run from Sungai Buloh to Putrajaya through Kepong, Batu, Jalan Ipoh, Titiwangsa, KLCC, Tun Razak Exchange, Bandar Malaysia, Sungai Besi, Serdang, UPM and Cyberjaya.
The line will have 35 stations, 11 of which will be underground.
The SSP Line project is being developed by Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) while MMC Gamuda KVMRT (T) Sdn Bhd is responsible for the underground works.
The tunnel boring machine, manufactured in Germany, first created history when it was used for tunnelling works for the MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang (SBK) Line.
Present at the event were Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and MRT Corp chief executive officer Datuk Seri Sharil Mokhtar.
