THE cost of organising Subang Jaya Municipal Council’s (MPSJ) annual Jom Konvoi programme has raised public concern.
A ratepayer, Adriene Leong, said the cost to the public purse would have been substantial, as the local council subsidised the programme which was a 3D/2N trip to Sabak Bernam.
The most recent programme held last month involved 80 youths, each paying RM63.60, who made the trip on motorcycles of 150CC and below.
“I am interested to find out the rationale for this programme and total cost involved,” she said.
In response, MPSJ corporate communications officer Muhammad Azli Miswan said the Jom Konvoi MPSJ programme, which was first organised in 2007, was part of MPSJ’s strategic plan to build a civil society.
“The fee of RM63.60 (inclusive of 6% GST) covers accommodation, food, petrol and insurance.
“This corporate social responsibility programme also involves non-governmental organisations, government agencies and private companies.
“It has received support and cooperation from the police, Road Transport Department, Road Safety Department and the Sabak Bernam District Council,” he said.
Muhammad Azli said the yearly programme aimed to unearth youths’ potential through community programmes and encourage them to participate in healthy activities and practices that would benefit them, their family and country.
“It is also aimed at discouraging drug use and mat rempit activities while increasing awareness on crime prevention, encouraging volunteerism as well as promoting domestic tourism,” he added.
The programme’s four modules cover anti-crime, civic, environment as well as health and fitness activities.
