THE Klang Municipal Council (MPK) has come under fire from councillors for the recurrence of flash floods in numerous parts of the town during recent weeks.
Councillor V. Maneyvannan said the council must be serious about resolving the flood problem as it has been occurring frequently.
“We have been talking about flash floods since 2008 but I do not see any improvement.
“It is time we seriously look into it,” he said at the council’s full board meeting.
In response, council president Mohd Yazid Bidin said a town hall meeting would be held with residents to update them on what the council had done so far.
Terming the floods an “act of God”, Yazid said the council had been doing its part to address the problem.
However, he pointed out that overflowing drains were under the Drainage and Irrigation Department’s (DID) jurisdiction.
“We are working together with DID to coordinate our efforts,” he said.
Councillor M. Nalan said all four state assemblymen as well as Klang MP Charles Santiago must be invited for the proposed town hall.
“The elected representatives are angry over the flash floods and want the council to explain,” he said
Yazid said the council had been carrying out several flash flood mitigation programmes including a RM350,000 project to address the situation at Jalan Tengku Kelana involving the construction of an outlet.
“We are also carrying out cleaning and repair works at numerous drains around the town.
“The project involves areas that have been badly hit by flash floods including Taman Melawis, Southern Park and Palm Grove,” he said.
