Letter - Focus on improving higher density living

I think that future development of KL should move away from creating more townships and instead focus on improving higher density living within developed urban townships.  This is I think worth exploring as I think that more people should benefit from developed infrastructure rather than diverting resources to creating more townships.

My views are that I think with the rapid expansion of network infrastructure in KL and Selangor, it will be something that the government will need to look into to ensure a higher density living.  This will allow more people to enjoy the benefits of the new infrastructure and thereby spurring the productivity growth of the nation.

With the amount of money being spent on the MRT and LRT network, and its related infrastructure, it does not make economic sense now to build more and more townships, duplicating infrastructure network set-up cost.  It is probably time to look at opportunities to develop legislation that allows for the redevelopment of existing townships to cater to a higher density living around planned established network.

We can argue that Malaysia has plenty of land and therefore this is not a priority of the government.  But that I feel is so short-sighted as we continue to allow for resources to be diverted to development of unnecessary townships.  Instead, resources should be diverted to higher density living in developed townships as more people tend to benefit from the matured infrastructure and thus create a more productive nation.

I think that this is a smart way to move forward and that en bloc legislation is probably one of the cornerstones to realise this vision.  Unfortunately, I am not sure what the efforts are to date, in terms of developing this legislation.

Efforts should be directed at enhancing the environment for higher density living and urban planning.  With enough planning and education, we can make more of the  population use the planned MRT and LRT network, and hopefully this will ease the jam around Malaysia and encourage mass travelling on public transport and infrastructure instead of cars and motorbikes.  With higher density living, we have no choice but encourage the use of public network and ultimately force public urban planners to be more efficient and accountable in its policy formulation and implementation.

Malaysians now need to switch its mindset to utlising mass transport infrastructure rather than continuing pumping resources into more and more townships development on the argument that its cheaper to live outside the city.
