THE Kepong Baru Timur voting district centre (PDM) organised an awareness programme near the market along Persiaran Mergastua in Kepong Baru to educate the public on waste separation.
Representatives from the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) gave a briefing to attendees on the importance of waste separation and how to do it.
Kepong Gerakan parliamentary coordinator Ong Siang Liang, who organised the event, said residents associations were invited to the briefing for them to spread the message to their neighbours.
“We want to promote the 3R concept of recycle, reuse and reduce.
“We aim to make Kepong a liveable place,” he said.
He said this was the seventh community programme by PDM.
“Previously, we had community policing and gotong-royong. Next event we have in mind is to celebrate the Mooncake Festival.”
During the question-and-answer session that followed, Nova 2 Apartment Residents Association chairman Yap Chee Gong suggested that the authorities put up more signboards with their hotline numbers to enable the public to call if they saw illegal dumping activities.
On waste separation at the apartment, he said there was inadequate awareness.
“They must change their thinking, they are not living in isolation and their actions will have an impact on other residents,” he added.
It was earlier reported (“SWCorp: Recycling cages to remain despite low usage”, Nov 16, 2016) that under Act 672 of the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act 2007, it has been mandatory since June 1 last year for households in Kuala Lumpur to separate solid waste at source.
