FOR Lim Song Ming, walking around his neighbourhood listening to people and helping them solve their problems is something he loves to do.
The chairman of the Jalan Kapar Residents Association (RA) Mile 1 ½ volunteers his time to oversee the community of about 1,900 residential properties, in what used to be a laid-back neighbourhood
“I enjoy meeting people and being the RA chairman. I grew up in this area so I am happy to help resolve matters with Klang Municipal Council (MPK), the north Klang police and utility firms.
“The social work allows me to meet up with long-time friends,” said Song Ming.
The RA is 45 years old and Song Ming is the eighth chairman.
Most of the people living in the area are closely knit and always help each other.
Song Ming said he took over as chairman and decided to do away with membership fees.
“I want all the residents to feel united and not be cut off from the RA just because of a RM10 annual fee.”
Song Ming is assisted by Lim Lian Chong in organising annual dinner gatherings with the north Klang police , so the residents can meet with them.
“This way, the senior citizens and others in the neighbourhood feel safe. All of them become the ears and eyes of the police,” he added.
Song Ming said the costs for the annual dinners were footed by him and the venues were sponsored by close friends.
Lian Chong said one of the problems the neighbourhood faced were flash floods, and he urged MPK to clean up the drains on a regular basis.
Flash floods occur but they recede within 35 minutes, he said.
He added that the neighbourhood had changed from housing wooden buildings to the current brick houses.
“We hope MPK president Datuk Mohamad Yasid Bidin can visit our neighbourhood to see what measures can be taken to resolve the flash floods,” said Lian Chong.
