DEVELOPER Sunway Property is embarking on a larger scale of celebrations for this year’s World Environment Day, by holding community events in Penang, Ipoh, Bandar Sunway in Klang Valley and Johor Baru.
Themed “Race for a Better Planet”, the public and Sunway communities and families will get to take part in an environment-themed race at each location, said Sunway Berhad Property Development Division managing director Sarena Cheah.
In Penang, “Hike With Nature” will take place at Nan Shan Hill on May 29, from 7am to noon, with fringe activities such as workshops, a recycling costume competition, fashion show and public talks.
On May 28, the “Discovery Race” will take place at Sunway City Ipoh.
A themed treasure hunt, participants have to answer environment-related puzzles and complete tasks for chances at winning attractive prizes.
Ipoh residents can also browse through a special green market and join in sustainable living workshops organised by EcoKnights, the developer’s local environmental non-governmental organisation (NGO) partner.
Meanwhile, Klang Valley residents can take part in “Discovery Walk 2.0”, a continuation of last year’s successful environment-themed treasure hunt set around the South Quay vicinity.
From 7am to 2pm on June 4, other activities include the Green Market, featuring local social enterprises conducting urban organic farming such as Uniworco.
Other enterprises, such as Tanamera Tropical Spa and Products, which specialises in Malaysian natural spa products, will also be present.
In Johor Baru, the public will be encouraged to cycle around Sunway Iskandar on May 28 with the event “Ride with Nature”.
Tree planting and fish-releasing activities are also on the itinerary, along with a lucky draw for participants.
“We wanted a green market this year, that would showcase some amazing local brands championing sustainability in their own individual way,” said Cheah, adding that all Sunway’s venues would be dishing out only vegetarian food served in biodegradable bentos.
“Hopefully, green issues today are no longer the boring kind, but is now instead activities and programmes that can inspire and empower the public to take positive actions at home,” said Cheah.
