PASIR GUDANG: The state government has rubbished claims by the Opposition that the conversion of bumiputra-status houses to non-bumi involved units in the state’s affordable housing scheme.
Mentri Besar Datuk Mohamed Khaled Nordin said none of the 3,000 houses converted from bumi to international lots were under the Johor Affordable Housing Scheme (RMMJ).
He said since late 2013, the state authorities had approved a change in the status of 3,000 bumi houses priced from RM150,000 and above.
In Johor, an affordable house is defined as one priced below RM150,000 and developers are required to allocate 40% of their projects for RMMJ houses.
“We have managed to collect RM600mil from developers and the money has been utilised to build some 6,000 units of RMMJ houses,” Mohamed Khaled told reporters after opening the SMK Taman Scientex Parent-Teacher Association meeting here.
“The conversion from bumi to non-bumi is not unusual.
“It is also taking place in other states including Selangor which is under the Opposition,” he said, adding before 2013, developers did not have to pay for conversion.
Mohamed Khaled added that in some states, the conversion of the status was done automatically but in Johor, developers were required to submit their applications for approval from the relevant state authorities.
