JOHOR BARU: The Government aims to strengthen Malaysia’s position as a main player for halal products worldwide beyond 2050.
Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Chua Tee Yong said the global halal industry had become competitive and he was confident Malaysia still holds a competitive advantage over other countries.
“The sector is a huge market and other countries such as Indonesia, Thailand and even United States are exploring it.
“But Malaysia already has the lead compared to our competitors as we have a good and vibrant eco-system such as finances and investments for the halal industry to flourish here,” he said after attending the International Trade and Industry Ministry’s TN50 dialogue session at a hotel here.
He pointed out that the halal industry contributed to 7.5% of the country’s gross domestic product and that the Government believes the industry will grow even more.
“Malaysia has a very good track record with world-class certification and strong regulatory framework when it comes to halal products,” he said.
On the TN50 event, Chua, who is also Labis MP and MCA vice-president, said it was a Government initiative to create dialogue and forum sessions to get feedback from the people.
