THE RM2bil Island Medical City project was an issue of contention between two assemblymen at the state assembly.
When Yap Soo Huey (DAP-Pulau Tikus) compared the development of public and private hospitals in tandem, it riled up Jagdeep Singh (DAP-Datuk Keramat).
“Do not make comparisons with Singapore as the new project is to reduce our dependency on travelling to foreign countries for medical treatment,” said Jagdeep last night.
“When my father, the late Karpal Singh met with an accident, we had to seek treatment in Singapore as no local hospitals could treat him.”
Yap said there should be more details on the project and the new hospital should create a special fund for locals to seek treatment.
“Medical tourism should be comprehensive like in Singapore and not merely a project to make profits, as the waiting time in hospitals has increased tremendously.”
Jagdeep, who then interjected, said the rising number of patients had brought in the issue of housing ‘foreign patients’ who are being placed in apartments by private hospitals.
“The Peel Avenue project would provide 1,000 more beds and reduce the number of them being placed in apartments while on treatment,” he added.
