SIBU: 2016 has been a fruitful year for Sibu Municipal Council (SMC), said its chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King.
Speaking at the council meeting, Tiong said despite the lack of development fund, the council continued to serve the people by providing basic maintenance of infrastructure, facilities, landscaping and municipal services.
“We have been working diligently over the past year to ensure clean, safe, vibrant and sustainable Sibu,” he added.
On infrastructure, he highlighted that for the whole year, it spent about RM23.4mil to repair and upgrade roads and drains.
Separately, the council impounded 339 stray dogs, issued 5,492 compounds for illegal parking and 1,935 compounds for littering in central business district area.
As for the safe city programme, Tiong said SMC had installed another 110 units of closed-circuit television (CCTV) inside the Lembangan multi-storey carpark.
The council worked closely with Sibu police to monitor 90 CCTV cameras installed under the Urban Surveillance programme.
“A total of 81 new streetlights have been installed in 2016 costing RM324,943,” he added.
SMC collected RM35mil in assessment this year.
On Visit Sibu Year 2017, 12 major events had been planned so far, Tiong said.
The festival, which will be launched on Dec 31, is themed Sibu – Heartland of Borneo.
