A CONSUMER group has labelled the reconstruction of road kerbs at the end of Lorong Perbandaran, Jalan Raya Barat, and a short stretch of Jalan Teluk Pulai in Klang a “wasteful project.”
Klang Consumer Association (KCA) president Devadass Anjan said the removal of the road kerbs’ concrete blocks that were still in good condition was a wasteful exercise. It is a project by Klang Municipal Council (MPK).
“Months earlier, scupper drains were built along Jalan Raya Barat just outside a block of apartments, to resolve the constant problem of water logging that reduced the two-lane road to a single lane when it rained. Since the scupper drains were made, the problem of water logging had been resolved,” he said.
Scupper drains are outlets on the side of kerbs, built for the purpose of allowing water to flow into the main drain.
MPK secretary Adi Faizal Ahmad Tarmizi told StarMetro that the new kerbs were being constructed together with the scupper drains.
“The construction cost for new kerbs at the end of Lorong Perbandaran, Jalan Raya Barat and a short stretch of Jalan Teluk Pulai is estimated at RM300,000,” he said.
Devadass questioned the need to spend money to have new kerbs “built just for aesthetic value”.
“On May 28, MPK workers had given a new coat of paint to the road kerbs along these roads but a week later, the painted kerbs were dug up. It is absurd.
“The council is wasting people’s monies. This project should be stopped immediately,” he said.
Devadass urged MPK to explain to the people the need for new kerbs when the scupper drains were completed and the water logging problem was resolved.
