In the month of June, Cheras has surpassed Mont Kiara as one of the most searched areas on Propwall.my
Once a sleepy tin mining town, Cheras has developed into a busy district stretching from Kuala Lumpur’s core to the south-eastern rim of Selangor state – a distance of over 15 kilometres from Maluri at the northernmost tip to the 11th Mile (Batu 11) of Federal Route 1 at the edge of Kajang.
A tiny sliver of Cheras, from the residential neighbourhood of Taman Bukit Cheras to Taman Dahlia, falls within the limits of the city’s tenth district, Bandar Tun Razak, while one of the most densely populated parts of Cheras – and arguably, the entire Klang Valley – is administered as Kuala Lumpur’s 11th district.
The urban portion of Cheras, from Jalan Yew and the Pudu Wet Market along Jalan Pasar to the famed night market of Taman Connaught, is what most people recall when thinking of Cheras – and if road traffic is an accurate indicator of commercial activity, Cheras is clearly booming.
Outside city limits, the majority of Cheras is encircled by the Kuala Lumpur Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2), the Cheras-Kajang Expressway (CKE) leading towards Kajang, in addition to the Sungai Besi Expressway (SBE) and the Kajang Dispersal Link Expressway (SILK) skirting along the edges of Seri Kembangan.
Given the high population density in neighbouring districts and along the city’s edge, in addition to the district’s reach from the city to rural neighbourhoods in the southeast, motorists often have to contend with significant rush-hour congestion – especially along Jalan Cheras, the MRR2, the SALAK Expressway, the SILK highway, and the SBE leading into Kajang.
With the completion of the MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang (SBK) route, commuters are afforded a total of 11 stops in Cheras, from the edge of Kuala Lumpur and the MyTOWN Shopping Centre on Jalan Cochrane to the 11th Mile of Jalan Cheras.
The notable commercial centres of this sprawling district draw regular crowds on the weekends, with people flocking to Ikea and MyTown on Jalan Cochrane, Sunway Velocity Mall on Jalan Peel, and the Aeon Shopping Centre in Taman Maluri, via the extensive networks of buses and trains.
One of Cheras’ oldest shopping centres, the Cheras Leisure Mall, began operations in 1994 and recently underwent a renovation – and with a convenient connection to an MRT station – it is has returned as one of the region’s most visited retail hubs.
Cheras is better known for its landed homes but recent developments in close proximity to Cheras’ 11 MRT stations have greatly increased the range of transit-oriented strata properties in the region.
Due to the district's maturity, vintage homes can be found between the gentle slopes of Cheras; townhouses, semi-detached homes, and opulent bungalows are found in greater numbers closer to the foothills of the Titiwangsa Range and neighbouring Ampang, Ulu Langat, and Ulu Semenyih.
Residents across Cheras have access to world-class facilities: reputable hospitals – the Pantai Hospital and the Columbia Asia Hospital being among the most prominent – in addition to international schools (the Sri Sempurna International School, Sri Columbia Private School, Cempaka International School, and the Anfal International School) and universities (UCSI, AMU, and the UKM Medical Molecular Biology Institute).
