AFTER 18 years of waiting, the 370 unit owners of Majestic Heights (Phase 2A) in Paya Terubong, Penang, are looking forward to getting the keys to their apartments.
The final hurdle is Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s inspection which is expected to be completed on Jan 9.
“We expect the Certificate of Compliance and Completion (CCC) to be issued after that inspection and the residents will be able to get their keys before the end of January,” said state Housing Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh when visiting the site with Paya Terubong assemblyman Yeoh Soon Hin on Christmas Eve.
The project was abandoned in 1998 when it was 70% completed. It was revived in July last year when it was taken over by PLB Land Sdn Bhd.
“The residents are joyful that they will be celebrating CNY in their new homes,” he added.
Jagdeep Singh later visited Block C of Rifle Range Flats in Air Itam.
The Star recently reported that the 17-floor high-rise suffered the acts of arsonists who torched its three elevators between July and Nov.
The fire-damaged lifts left the 1,000-odd dwellers with no choice but the stairs.
Many of the residents are senior citizens and the disabled and, unable to bear the strain of walking up and down the stairs, they implored their neighbours and children to help them get their daily necessities.
After their plight was made public, the state government took immediate action.
“The state Housing Department spent RM103,880 to repair one lift and it is fully functional now.
“I have spoken to the Chief Minister about repairing the other two lifts and he agreed to the proposal. We hope to get these lifts operational by next month,” said Jagdeep.
He added that he agreed to a proposal by Kebun Bunga assemblyman Cheah Kah Peng for surveillance cameras be installed in the lifts to deter further vandalism.
He said he would be bring it up in the next state exco meeting.
